Accidents and injuries on site from wall ties could be eliminated

Construction companies and major brickwork contractors in the North West could probably eliminate accidents and injuries on building sites involving wall ties, according to a major wall tie manufacturer.

High Peak-based Tec Ties Limited says that many construction companies and brickwork contractors in the region are having to fit plastic caps on the ends of wall ties in order to try to protect bricklayers and other construction site workers from being injured.

However, Tec Ties believes that accidents and injuries could be avoided if bricklayers used Tec Ties’ tangle free wall ties, which have closed ends. Tec Ties says that injuries and accidents are a particular problem

on the 3-storey and above developments such as apartment blocks, office premises and industrial buildings which use the Type 1 Heavy Duty Wall Ties.

Bob McGrouther, National Sales Manager of Tec Ties Limited, explains: “There have been reports recently that construction companies and major brickwork contractors in the region have been putting a plastic safety cap on the ends of their wall ties following an increase in the number of bricklayers and other on site workers sustaining bad cuts from the protruding and exposed point of the Type 1 Heavy Duty Wall Tie.

“Bricklayers have to put the cap on the end of the wall ties as they lay the inner leaf of the wall and then take the cap off when they lay the outer leaf.

“This is time consuming and frankly unnecessary. If construction companies and the major brickwork contractors would use the TT1 Heavy Duty Wall Tie from Tec Ties which has a closed end and is manufactured out of stainless steel wire they would prevent accidents or injury on site and would avoid the resulting compensation claims and visits from the Health & Safety Executive.”

Mr McGrouther adds: “We were well aware of the dangers associated with type 1 heavy duty wall ties on the market, therefore, we designed our ties with a closed end and manufactured them out of stainless steel wire instead of stainless steel strip.”

“This eliminates the risk of bricklayers and other construction site workers injuring themselves if they walk into or brush past our wall tie.” “This makes our TT1 Heavy Duty Wall Tie arguably the safest type 1 tie on the market - to use and to handle.”

“Furthermore, our TT1 Heavy Duty Wall Ties are supplied inbundles, not boxes, so there’s no packaging waste on site too. They are also easier to store, particularly in inclement weather.” Mr McGrouther says that the company’s TT1 Heavy Duty Wall Ties have been fully tested to the European standards and are CE marked.

Based in Hurstfield Industrial Estate at Hague Bar, near New Mills, Tec Ties manufactures a comprehensive range of constructionfixings, including the TT1 Heavy Duty Wall Ties and distributes its range of products through builders’ merchants across the UK.

TTHIR Head restraints

The TTIHR Head Restraint is designed to restrain the top of the inner leaf of cavity walls. The TTIHR allows vertical movement between the inner leaf and the structure by using a rectangular sleeve which sits in the vertical joint and a top section bolted to the soffit which may slide within the sleeve.

The TTIHR is available with 3 head options i.e., slotted, 10mm hole and 6mm hole. The standard TTIHR is supplied to suit a standard block but specials can be made to suit site requirements.

Tecties introduce two new tangle free ties to the range

Following the recent landing of the 275mm TT2 for a 150mm cavity, Tecties have taken the next step and launched it’s big brother the 300mm TT2 for a 150mm cavity.

One small step for Tecties, a giant leap towards filling the void for the larger cavity.

Tecties are now 'CE Marking' tangle free ties

Tecties are now “CE Marking” their tangle free range of wall ties to meet the requirements of the Construction Products Regulation. This new Regulation has been adopted by the European Commission and the UK Government and replaces the Construction Products Directive.

As a result of this CE Marking will soon become mandatory with a date of July 2013 for construction products to meet the CE requirements of the new regulation.

Tecties wins national contract to supply Bloor Homes with tangle free wall ties

Tec Ties has won a contract to supply its closed end, tangle free wall ties to national housebuilders Bloor Homes. Bob McGrouther, National Sales Manager for Tec Ties, said: “Bloor Homes has decided to use our tangle free closed end wall ties for their health and safety benefits.

“The closed end of the wall tie prevents tangling and is an in-built safety feature to eliminate accidents and injury to those on site.” He added: “We are delighted that the safety aspects of our products have been recognised by national housebuilder Bloor Homes.

Chris Burton, Group Commercial Director, of Bloor Homes, said: “Bloor Homes were looking for a closed end wall tie that would prevent any snagging. Tec Ties provides the ideal solution."

“Bricklayers do not have the time or inclination to untangle wall ties so Tec Ties tangle free ties offer a no waste, low cost solution to builders and contractors," said Bob McGrouther.

Tec Ties supplies the tangle free wall ties in bundles, rather than boxes, which removes packaging waste and makes them easier to store, particularly in inclement weather. The stainless steel tangle free wall ties provide excellent corrosion resistance and long term durability.

Improved Packaging

To improve the packaging of the unique tangle free range of wall ties we have replaced the old bag tie with the new cable tie.

This not only gives an enhanced look to the bundle – it also has practical benefits.By using pre-tensioning tools, the application of the cable tie provides a consistently tight and secure pack.

Addition to range - Two Part Ties

TecTies complete the range of cavity ties with the launch of the unique turn and lock Two Part Tie designed for cavity widths above 150mm.

Addition to range – 250mm TT4 Housing Ties

TecTies expand the range of housing ties with the introduction of the 250mm long version.

Tested to BS EN 845 the ties are suitable for 101mm to 125mm wide cavities accommodating the trend towards wider cavity widths. The ties are also suitable for Type A (party walls) and meet the technical requirements of NHBC.

25/14 Channel Ties

TecTies introduce the 25/14 Channel Tie designed with the “u” shaped head and T slot to fit the 25/14 channel system.

It has the slotted end for mortar embedment which has been independently tested under shear and tension.

Shear and Tension Test

TecTies have completed the independent testing of Restraint and Movement Ties at Ceram Building Technology to determine the Shear and Tension performance for the slotted end in mortar embedment.

The Ties achieved 2610N in shear and 1830N in tension.

Addition to range – Timber Frame Ties

TecTies add further ties to their range with the introduction of Stainless Steel Timber Frame Ties.

Fully tested to BS EN 846 the ties meet the requirements of DD140 as type 6 tie and the technical requirements of NHBC. TecTies Timber Frame Ties are supplied with stainless steel annular ring

shank nails and manufactured in three sizes to suit 50mm, 75mm and 100mm cavity widths.
